Belmar, Joan

Joan Belmar was born in Chile and spent time living in Spain before arriving in Washington, DC in 1999. His work has been exhibited across the United States and internationally. Belmar's paintings, works on paper and 3-D paintings present an iconography that reflects his interest in the mind's way of processing the passing of time. Bicycles, spinning tops and hobby horses are some of the elements that lend a whimsical nature to Belmar's work. The 3-D paintings are created by using strips of Mylar and acetate to build up a space inside the painting. The sheer quality of the Mylar captures and reflects light and encourages an up close viewing of the work to reveal the depth that has been created.
